How international students apply for a SIN in Canada

Understand Service Canada's SIN document requirements, official application options and the difference between a SIN and permission to work.

5 minute read

A Social Insurance Number is used for work and certain government programs in Canada. For an international student, the important first check is what the study permit allows. A SIN is not a work permit and does not decide whether you can take a job.

1. Start with your permit, not a paid middleman

Service Canada says temporary residents can use a work or study permit that states they may work or accept employment in Canada as a primary identity document. If the required work wording is missing, read the official instructions and contact IRCC about the permit. Do not assume applying for a SIN can fix work authorization.

Service Canada states that there is no fee to apply for a SIN. Use its official application page; the Newcomer Copilot pass pays for an optional explanation tool, not a SIN application.

2. Match the documents to your situation

The required-documents page explains primary identity documents, secondary identity documents and supporting documents for name changes. The application tool provides the requirements for your circumstances and the way you apply.

  1. Check the immigration document that proves your status and work wording.
  2. Review the accepted secondary identity documents, such as a passport, on the official page.
  3. If names differ between documents, read the supporting-document requirements before submitting.
  4. For documents not in English or French, follow Service Canada's translation requirements. An AI translation is not a substitute for those requirements.

3. Choose an official application route

Service Canada provides online, mail and in-person application information. Select the route that works for you and follow its exact document instructions. Do not rely on a third-party promise of instant processing or guaranteed acceptance.

  1. Open the Apply for a SIN page below.
  2. Review the required documents for your chosen route before starting.
  3. Check names, dates and uploaded copies against the official instructions.
  4. Keep the confirmation private. Do not paste your SIN or identity documents into the assistant.

4. Check work rules separately

After you receive a SIN, you still need to meet IRCC's conditions for the work you do. Starting studies, enrolment status, permit conditions and the type of work can matter. Read the off-campus work guide and the linked IRCC page before relying on a general hours limit.

Useful assistant questions ask what a source says, rather than asking the AI to decide whether your personal case qualifies. For a case-specific decision, speak with your school or a licensed Canadian immigration professional as appropriate.
